Please note, if the intention is to transfer a Betterment IRA to an external Employer Sponsored account like 401(k) the instructions are slightly different.
You will first need to reach out to the receiving institution and request to have client assets transferred out of Betterment to the new provider. They will need to know the client's Betterment account number, which can be found in “Settings.” There are never any fees to transfer out or close a Betterment account. For non-IRA account transfers, we will transfer only full shares directly to another institution: we cannot transfer partial shares.
What we need:
- Transfer paperwork (from the receiving institution) that also includes a copy of the first page (only) of the client's most recent Betterment statement, located on their Documents page
- If you are transferring out more than $250,000, the transfer paperwork will need to be medallion signature guaranteed*
- Betterment cannot accept electronic transfer requests, faxed, or digital copies of transfer paperwork
For IRAs, 401(k)s and other tax-advantaged retirement accounts
Betterment issues a check to the new provider for the full amount, or specified partial dollar amount requested
Betterment cannot transfer out retirement accounts in-kind;
In-kind transfer requests will result instead in liquidating & mailing proceeds via check to the new provider
If you are transferring out less than $250,000, please simply send your completed transfer paperwork
For taxable accounts
Betterment transfers all full shares in-kind to the new institution
Partial shares will remain in the client's Betterment account following the transfer of all full shares
Remaining partial shares can be liquidated to a linked and verified bank account by requesting a withdrawal from the client's Betterment interface
- For non-IRA or 401(k) transfers of less than $250,000, please have your signature notarized or medallion signature guaranteed

Generally, transfers are completed within 3-4 weeks of receiving acceptable transfer paperwork. You and the client will be notified via email once the request is received and associated with the client's profile.
Betterment processes all outbound paperwork within 1-2 business days of receipt. If the paperwork is not in good order, we’ll send an email to the client and copy the advisor.
*A medallion signature guarantee is an extra level of security to prevent the unauthorized transfer of your assets. You can obtain a one at a local financial institution with which you have an account. You will need to bring a statement from your current IRA provider to obtain a medallion signature guarantee.
